BLOG: Unofficial Snow Day

BLOG%3A+Unofficial+Snow+Day

From January 11 to January 12, 2019 it snowed 7.5 inches in Highlands Ranch. Even though the district did not implement a delay, our new second semester staffer, freshman Kei Ivery, couldn’t come to school due to the eight inches of snow that fell at her house in Castle Rock. This is a recap of her snow day:

Most kids get excited about a snow day, knowing that they will be missing school for an entire day thanks to Mother Nature’s actions. Snow days offer a chance for kids to do whatever they please, like sledding or even sitting at home by the fire. They breathe a sigh of relief knowing that they have an extra day to finish the school work that they didn’t get done the previous night.

But my snow day was a little different because I was the only one having a snow day and everyone else was at school. I was stuck at home because there was too much snow on the ground at my house for my parents to even drive me to school.

This is not the first time this has happened, so I followed my routine and emailed my teachers. Then, I continued on with my day, just not at school. With the technology available today, it is easy to do my homework online. My day was pretty uneventful, until late afternoon when I decided to take my little sister sledding.

I hadn’t been sledding since elementary school, so my sledding skills were a little rusty. We walked to the park, which had a very steep sledding hill, jumped on the sled and coasted down the hill. Unfortunately, the fun didn’t last very long because I fell off the sled twice. Both times I fell off, the snow engulfed me. I had snow in my coat, on my face, and in my hair. Quickly, I was freezing and my hair felt like it turned to ice. With my sister laughing at me, we headed home and I looked forward to warming up and putting the sledding fiasco behind me.

My whole family greeted us as we arrived home, and when they saw me, it didn’t take them long to figure out what happened, which only added to the miserable sledding experience. After a few laughs and a few withering remarks, though, I embraced the situation and laughed with them. I now realize my snow day sledding experience created a memory that we will all laugh about over the years. I don’t know if I’ll ever go sledding again, but if I do, I’ll make sure to take precautions to avoid another disaster.
