Mountain Vista’s varsity men’s soccer team will take on Fairview High School (seeded no. 1) on Wednesday, Nov. 11 in the last round of playoffs before the 5A state championship game.
Mountain Vista, seeded no. 28, has beaten Monarch High School (5), Aurora Central (12) and Arapahoe (4) on their way to the semifinals. All scores have ended 2-1, Vista.
The hardest game for the Eagles so far has been their quarterfinal game against Arapahoe High School. Vista immediately put up two points before the half. Arapahoe scored once in the second half of the game, allowing the Eagles to walk away with a 2-1 victory.
“The team is playing really good soccer right now and that’s why we’re in the final four,” senior Jackson Lines said. “It was definitely a team win for us.”
Getting to where there are now wasn’t easy for the Eagles.
“[The win] just proves to every athlete and every person to never give up,” junior Cray Cordero said. “With two games left in league we were thinking that we might not make playoffs– and here we are in the semis for state.”
Mountain Vista is ready to take on the no. 1 seed with confidence.
Fairview is 15-2-1 on the season overall and has beat out Gateway (32), Rocky Mountain (17) and Boulder (9).
Looking at the road to playoffs, the Eagles have faced tougher teams than Fairview while coming out with the same wins.
“Obviously everyone knows they are the no. 1 seed, but that doesn’t matter to us,” Lines said. “Seeding doesn’t matter when you’re this far into the tournament. I feel great about us as a team and I know that if we play our game then we can do great things against them.”
Most of the players agree with Lines and appreciate that Vista is prepared to take on Fairview with victory in mind.
“My mindset is that it’s just another team,” Cordero said. “We need to get the job done and I know we can.”
