The Rugby Update

SARA HAINSEY//SAVANNAH TAYLOR

“I think that rugby is an unappreciated sport especially for women. It’s a good way to get exercise and make friends and get your anger out. There’s a very strong sense of community on our team and I felt very needed right off the bat,” senior Izzy Lanka said.

Many people know all of the stats and good players on the football team, basketball team and other major sports. However, there are many sports that go unnoticed or unappreciated.

The rugby season has come to a close. The Mountain Vista girls varsity team achieved a lot this year such as making it to the playoffs for state. Two team members, junior Tamarin Joubert and senior Blaire Pavone have had a lot of personal success.

Joubert was selected to play for a notional team that won the Serevi Cup in Seattle, WA in August 2014.

“ I thought it was too good to be true. I was surrounded by All-Americans and overall people I was so inspired by. Training with them is something I will never forget,” Joubert said.

Pavone was selected as Student Athlete of the Year. “It was a big honor for me because I was chosen out of the entire state. I was really shocked when it happened,” Pavone said.

“I like that we have girls from all different schools because it means that we have one things that holds us together and that is our sport,” Lanka said.
