Ten Songs to Jam to for International Peace Day

KATIE PICKRELL

The United Nations implemented the International Day of Peace in 1981. The day marks a time of ceasefire and also coincides with the UN’s opening season. To commemorate the day, here’s 10 songs against war and for the idea of peace.

Imagine: John Lennon

You may say I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one. I hope someday you’ll join us, and the world will live as one.

Where is the Love: The Black Eyed Peas

Yo’, whatever happened to the values of humanity? Whatever happened to the fairness in equality? Instead in spreading love we’re spreading animosity. Lack of understanding, leading lives away from unity.

Fortunate Son: Creedence Clearwater Revival

Some folks inherit star spangled eyes, they send you down to war, Lord. And when you ask ’em, “How much should we give?” they only answer “More! More! More!”

Born in the U.S.A: Bruce Springsteen

Had a brother at Khe Sahn fighting off the Viet Cong. They’re still there he’s all gone. He had a woman he loved in Saigon, I got a picture of him in her arms now.

Earth Song: Michael Jackson

What have we done to the world? Look what we’ve done. What about all the peace that you pledge your only son…

Peace, Love and Understanding: Elvis Costello

I ask myself, is all hope lost? Is there only pain, and hatred, and misery? And each time I feel like this inside, there’s one thing I wanna know. What’s so funny ’bout peace, love, and understanding?

What a Wonderful World: Louis Armstrong

I hear babies cryin’. I watch them grow. They’ll learn much more than I’ll ever know. And I think to myself, what a wonderful world.

Somewhere Over the Rainbow: Israel Kamakawiwo’Ole

Someday I’ll wish upon a star, wake up where the clouds are far behind me, where trouble melts like lemon drops.

Bomb the World: Michael Franti

We can bomb the world to pieces, but we can’t bomb it into peace.

Waving Flag: K’naan

But look how they treat us, make us believers. We fight their battles, then they deceive us. Try to control us, they couldn’t hold us ’cause we just move forward like Buffalo Soldiers.
