Sounds of the Season Review

CESCO VIOLA

The MVHS orchestras and bands always puts on wonderful shows, and last night was no exception.
The show may not have been as good as some of their other concerts, but the show was still very enjoyable, especially for a show that was free admission.
The first half of the show was the string, chamber, and symphony orchestras.
All of the pieces that they played were well performed, enjoyable to listen too, and fit well into the holiday spirit.
The best pieces that were performed were Christmas Troika, Fantasia on “Greensleeves,” Allegro Vivo from “Concerto Grosso” and March of the Nutcracker.
While all of the pieces were a joy to listen to, the first half of the concert did suffer from one problem. None of the pieces had a truly memorable piece that could truly elevate the show from a really good show, to a great show.
This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but it doesn’t make it as good as it could be.
The second half of the show was the Percussion Ensemble, Symphonic Band, and the Wind Ensemble.
Like the orchestras, all of pieces that were selected for the bands were executed wonderfully.
The best pieces performed were Christmas Time is Here, Millenium, NIMROD from “Enigma Variations” and Salvation is Created.
All of the pieces fit the holiday season, and are a joy to listen to.
Unfortunately, the bands suffer from the same problem as the orchestras. All of the selections are good, and performed very well, but there is still a lack one piece that can make the whole concert great.
This could stem from the fact that a lot of the songs chosen have been done a lot in the past. They are still fun to listen too, but it isn’t anything I haven’t heard before.
Regardless, all of the pieces were enjoyable and it would be foolish to miss the next concert.
The Sounds of the Season concert gets and 8.5/10.
