Tom Cruise stars in the new movie “Oblivion” with Morgan Freeman and Andrea Rosenburg. The movie had a strong opening week with $38 million at the box office. The plot for the movie is confusing so I will try to explain it without writing a novel.
Jack Harper and Victoria are the only humans left on Earth after the aliens called ‘Scavs’ attacked the planet. Their job is to fix the drones, when they are damaged, that circle the planet killing the Scavs that are still on Earth. Each day they receive intelligence from the Tet, which is a home base for the NASA space program. When all the drones are no longer in need of fixing Jack Harper and Victoria will be sent to Titan, one of Jupiter’s moons, with all the other humans. But when a spaceship crashes to Earth with a human crew, that are being killed off by the drones, Jack tries to stop the massacre.
He saves a woman who he has seen in recent flashbacks of the planet 50 years before his lifetime. His life begins to turn upside down when he learns the truth about the Tet, where all the humans have really gone, and who Jack Harper was.
Overall the movie was decent. I liked the beginning, but there was a good amount of voice over to explain the who, what, when, where and why. If you didn’t pay attention to that then the movie wouldn’t really make sense. The shots of the destroyed Earth was awesome and seeing the Washington Monument and the Capital building bent out of shape was really powerful. I loved the library scene; it made the destruction seem real. New York City was buried underneath a desert. The technology was also cool and Harper’s spaceship could maneuver in bizarre ways that looked very realistic.
I didn’t like how the movie was really dry in the middle. The plot was really confusing and you had to pay close attention. The end was the worst, though. It made my head explode, I won’t tell you anything, but it is not what I expected to happen. In fact I hated the ending it because was so out there that it almost ruined the movie for me.
I give the movie a 3 out of 5 stars. I liked the beginning and the concept was good, but the filmmakers added too much at the end. I would not recommend going to see it in theaters, rather, you could rent it from the library because I don’t think it is worth the ten bucks you will have to spend on a ticket.
