José Fernández Obituary

Miami Marlins star pitcher, José Fernández passed away in a tragic boating accident early Sunday, Sept. 25. He was 24.

Fernández was with two others at the time of the incident. The other two names will be released once relatives are notified. The boat crashed at the entrance of Miami harbor around 3 a.m.

Fernández was the National League Rookie of the Year in 2013 and a two-time all-star (2013 and 2016).

He made 76 career starts, posting a 2.58 earned run average, 589 strikeouts and 38 career wins.

The superstar was the team’s opening day starter and had a passion for the game that was unmatched. Don Mattingly, the manager of the Marlins, said when he played there was just joy with him.

Fernández was turning into the face of the franchise at the time of his passing. He was a cuban defect, attempting to flee the country two times before he was successful on his third try. Fernández also saved his mother from drowning on one of their attempts to flee the country.

He had a charisma that made him more than just a star athlete. It made him a positive influence on the community, and someone everyone could look up to.

“That kid that we saw on the field was 10 times better or more off the field then he was on,”  Eduardo Pérez said, an ESPN baseball commentator, during a live broadcast.

Fernández used his platform to help the community which is what made him such a special player. Many players have their pictures as children’s screen savers but few use that popularity to make the community better — Fernández did.

“Your thoughts and prayers go out to the young man’s family…it doesn’t matter which team you root for, the death of the superstar is sad,” Ron Quintana said, Mountain Vista Varsity baseball coach.

Fernández was a support beam for the community and he was an active leader on and off the field. The young star passed away much too soon. The baseball community as well as the community in Miami and around the world mourns the loss of the rising star.
