On Saturday, Jan. 19 at 11 a.m., five MVHS senior girls will be honored among 135 athletes from Douglas County schools at the National Girls and Women’s in Sports Day luncheon at Chaparral High School. The luncheon is hosted by the Douglas County Educational Foundation and Douglas County School District to recognize young women who “exhibit outstanding athletic accomplishments and character in the Douglas County Schools.”
Seniors Jesse Applehans, Laura Londono, Gabbi Miranda, Rachel Obering and Karlee Schwartzkopf are the honorees from MVHS. “We’re very excited to represent Mountain Vista,” Gabbi Miranda said, who played in the youth World Cup for soccer and is committed to play at UCLA in the fall.
“It’s an honor to be picked from all the incredible athletes here at Mountain Vista,” Karlee Schwartzkopf said, who placed All-State in the 2-mile and is ranked top 20 in the southwest region of the United States.
Schwartzkopf and Miranda both respect and look up to the classmates that they are to be honored with. “They’re all amazing athletes,” Schwartzkopf said. “They set a really good athletic and academic standard for girls at Mountain Vista to look up to,” Miranda said.
