First Model with Down Syndrome to Walk in NYFW

KENZIE WINSLOW

Jamie Brewer, actress and model, made history on Feb. 12. Brewer, known for her acting in American Horror Story, was the first women with Down syndrome to walk in the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Show in New York.

Brewer has been working with designer Carrie Hammer. Hammer has created an original design for Brewer’s walk on the catwalk. Thursday morning she went in for hair and makeup and she was more than ready. Brewer’s design for the show channelled her character from American Horror Story: Murder House, Adelaide. The show is dark and twisted so a black dress was expected.

Hammer’s shows typically break the model stereotype. When Katie Driscoll, advocate for those with Down syndrome, asked Hammer to include someone with Down syndrome in her show she was happy to. The two decided Brewer was the perfect pick.

Brewer is also an advocate for those with Down syndrome so naturally when this opportunity arose she jumped on it. Brewer was a member of the Arc Government Affairs Committee for the State of Texas. She also is modeling as a part of Hammer’s “Role Models not Runway Models” campaign.
