Cheer for a Cause Competition

Cheer+for+a+Cause+Competition

On Oct. 22, Varsity and Junior Varsity cheer hosted the Cheer for a Cause Competition in the Mountain Vista gym to raise money for Louisiana flood victims.

All money that came from the entrance fee, food, and Miracle Minute goes to Louisiana to help the families that were affected.

Both teams have been practicing for the past month in preparation for this competition, learning new stunts, as well as practicing their game day cheers.

“I feel like we did pretty good for our first competition,” sophomore Kendall Gay said. “There are always areas for us to improve and make better. Everyone has an important role to play.”

Gay is one of 16 girls on the JV team and this is her first year ever cheering.

“Being on cheer has been such a good experience,” Gay said. “I’ve learned so much and I’m excited for what comes later in the season.”

The competition went from 4-7:30 p.m. Varsity competed against Salida, Roosevelt, Grandview, Cherokee Trail, Rock Canyon, Faith Christian, Bear Creek and Douglas County High School. The JV team competed against Douglas County, Grandview, Rock Canyon, Roosevelt and Thompson Valley for their section of the competition.

The judges consisted of experienced cheer coaches from other gyms such as United Cheerleading and Peak Athletics. They judged the girls on the level of difficulty of their stunts and tumbling, as well as how they are executed.

“I feel like there’s always room for improvement. You can always do better than the last competition, even if you win. You can always do better than what you did last time.” Gay said.

Their next competition is in Pueblo, Colorado for the UCA Southern Colorado Regionals.
